Learn to Ride with Confidence
Travel Training is WestCAT's educational program designed to help people of all ages build the knowledge and confidence to use public transportation safely and independently. Whether you're a student riding to school for the first time, a parent helping your child learn the bus system, or someone exploring transit as a new way to travel, our resources are here to make every trip easier.
Our Travel Training collection combines storytelling, practical instruction, and real-world transit skills to create an engaging learning experience. Through illustrated books, interactive materials, and future educational resources, readers will learn how to:
- Plan a trip using WestCAT services.
- Ride safely and confidently.
- Practice good bus etiquette.
- Become familiar with local routes and community destinations.
- Discover the many benefits of choosing public transportation.

Zoe's First Ride
Our first Travel Training publication follows Zoe, a freshman riding the bus to school for the first time. With help from her friend Jordan and Ms. Tammy, a friendly WestCAT bus operator, Zoe learns everything from finding her bus stop to boarding, paying her fare, riding safely, and arriving at school with confidence.
This graphic novel-style story transforms everyday transit lessons into an engaging experience for students, families, and first-time riders.

Ask your driver if you need helpREAD THE SIGNS?
1. Every stop has a bus stop sign.
2. The LED sign on the front of the bus is called the headsign.
3. The headsign tells you the route number and the destination.
Left Side: Shows the number.
Right Side: Shows the place.
4. Check the route number. Check the destination. Get it.
Double Check:
- Is this my route?
- Is this where I want to go?
Smart Rider Tip
If you're not sure, ask the driver for before boarding.
BRING YOUR BIKE
Your bike. Your ride. More ways to go.
let the driver know you'll be loading your bike.
Pull up on the handle to lower the rack.
Lift your bike and place the front wheel in an open space.
Pull the hook over the front wheel and make sure it's secure.
When you get off, let the driver know you'll be taking a bike off the rack.
- The front rack holds 2 to 3 bikes.
- Boards are first come first served.
- Be sure the rack is up before the bus leaves.
- Helmets are always a good idea!
