Bikes on Buses

All WestCAT local fixed route, express, and Lynx buses are equipped with bike racks that will accommodate up to 2 bicycles on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Just grab your bike and follow these simple instructions and you’re on your way! Your safety is important to WestCAT. We’d like you to enjoy the bike racks and use them in a safe manner.

Using the On-Bus Bike Rack

Loading Your Bike

  • Prepare your bike for loading: remove water bottles, pumps and any other loose items.
  • Inform the bus operator that you will be loading your bike– don’t assume the driver sees you.
  • You can load your bicycle from the curb or in front of the bus. Do not step into oncoming traffic to load your bike.
  • Pull down to release the folded bike rack, if necessary. You only need to use one hand. Do not lean your bicycle against the coach.
  • Lift your bicycle onto the rack and fit the wheels into the proper wheel slots. Each wheel slot is clearly labeled for the front and rear wheels.
  • Raise the support arm over the front tire of the bike. Your bike is now securely latched.
  • Board the bus and enjoy the ride. Pay your regular fare or show your pass, the bicycle rides free.

If the exterior rack is full, please wait for the next bus.

Unloading Your Bike

  • Inform the bus operator that you will be unloading your bike as you approach your stop.
  • Use the front door to exit the bus.
  • Off load your bicycle from the front of the coach or the curb.
  • Do not step onto the traffic lane.
  • Raise the support arm off the tire. The support arm automatically folds down in a secure position.
  • Lift your bicycle out of the bike rack.
  • Fold up the bike rack if there are no other bikes loaded. The bike rack locks in place.
  • Step away from the bus with your bike and you’re on your way!

Bike Parking

Secure bike lockers are available for long-term parking at both the Hercules Transit Center and at El Cerrito del Norte BART station. These lockers, managed by Bike Link, cost $0.03-$0.05 per hour. Bike Link memberships can also be used at lockers across the Bay Area. Both the Hercules Transit Center and del Norte BART also have unsecured bike racks. For more information on how to use the secure lockers and how to obtain a card for their use, visit Bike Link.org.

Disclaimer: WCCTA/WestCAT is not responsible for damages incurred or caused to bicycles while on the transit system or at a bus stop, or during loading or unloading of the bicycle or cyclist loading and unloading the bike. The bike rider is responsible for any damage caused by the cyclist while loading or unloading the bike to the rack and if they fail to secure the bicycle on the rack properly.
